Conure Companions: A Species Overview
Meet the Conure Family
Conures are medium-sized parrots known for their vibrant colours, playful antics, and big personalities. There are dozens of species, but the most common companion conures include green-cheeked, sun, jenday, and pineapple conures.
Personality
Conures are often described as clowns of the bird world. They love to play, cuddle, and hang upside down. They are also vocal — sun conures in particular can be quite loud, which is important to consider if you live in an apartment.
Diet
A balanced diet of pellets, fresh fruits, and vegetables is ideal. Conures especially enjoy bell peppers, corn, grapes, and leafy greens. Avoid high-fat seed-only diets.
Training
Conures are intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement. They can learn tricks like step-up, wave, and even dunking a basketball. Clicker training works especially well.
Housing
Provide a cage at least 24 x 24 x 30 inches with plenty of toys. Conures are active birds that need several hours of supervised out-of-cage time daily. Rotate toys weekly to prevent boredom.
Health Concerns
Conures are prone to feather plucking when stressed or bored. Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD) and Pacheco's disease are serious conditions to be aware of. Regular avian vet visits are essential.
Lifespan
Conures live 20–30 years depending on the species, making them a serious long-term commitment.
