Everything you need to know about adopting and rehoming birds through BST.
BST Rehoming is Bird Sitting Toronto's dedicated platform for rehoming companion birds in the Greater Toronto Area. We connect birds in need of new homes with qualified, caring adopters through a thorough vetting process to ensure every bird finds the right match.
The process has three steps: First, you submit an online application for a specific bird. Next, you complete a short AI-powered chat interview where our system gets to know you, your experience, and your living situation. Finally, an admin reviews your application, the AI's assessment, and your overall fit before making a decision.
Once accepted, you'll receive an email notification with next steps. A BST team member will reach out to coordinate a meet-and-greet with the bird. We may also connect you with the bird's previous owner to learn about the bird's routine and preferences. From there, we'll arrange the handoff at a mutually convenient time.
The timeline varies depending on the number of applications received and the specific bird. Typically, applications are reviewed within a few days of the application deadline closing. The AI chat interview takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, and you'll hear back from us shortly after the review period ends.
Yes, we charge a small nominal adoption fee: $20 for standard-sized birds and $150 for extra-large or high-value species. These fees are not about profit — they serve an important purpose. Many companion birds are worth $200–$800 or more, and rare or large species can be valued at $1,000–$5,000+. By charging a fraction of that value, we help discourage people who might adopt a bird only to resell it for a quick profit. The fee also acts as a basic commitment check: if someone is not willing to invest a small amount upfront, they may not be prepared for the ongoing financial responsibility of bird ownership, including food, vet care, and enrichment. Think of it as vetting, not profiting — every dollar goes toward supporting our mission of finding birds the right homes.
We rehome a wide variety of companion bird species including parrots, conures, cockatiels, budgies, lovebirds, cockatoos, African greys, macaws, and more. The specific birds available change regularly, so check our listings page often or join our waitlist to be notified when new birds are posted.
Yes! If you need to find a new home for your bird, you can submit a rehome request through our "Rehome Your Bird" page. Provide details about your bird including species, age, temperament, and care requirements. Our team will review your submission and, once approved, list your bird on the platform to find a suitable adopter.
The AI chat interview is a conversational assessment that helps us understand your experience with birds, your home environment, daily routine, and what you're looking for in a companion bird. It's friendly and informative — not a test. The AI uses your responses to help match you with the right bird and provides our admin team with a detailed summary.
Our AI evaluates several factors during the chat interview, including your prior bird care experience, home setup and living situation, knowledge of the specific species, daily availability and commitment level, and overall compatibility with the bird's needs. The score is one part of the review — our admin team considers the full picture before making any decisions.
