Finding the Right Avian Vet
Why an Avian Specialist?
Birds are not dogs or cats. Their anatomy, diseases, and treatment protocols are vastly different. A general practice vet may miss critical signs that an avian specialist would catch immediately.
How to Find One
Search the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) directory for certified avian vets near you. In the GTA, there are several excellent avian clinics. Ask your local bird community for recommendations.
What to Expect
A good avian vet will weigh your bird at every visit, perform a physical exam checking eyes, nares, beak, feathers, and vent, and recommend annual bloodwork for medium and large parrots.
Annual Checkups
Even if your bird seems healthy, annual checkups are essential. Birds hide illness instinctively — by the time symptoms are visible, the disease may be advanced.
Emergency Signs
Seek immediate veterinary care if your bird shows difficulty breathing, bleeding, seizures, severe lethargy, or sudden loss of balance. Keep your avian vet's emergency number saved in your phone.
Cost
Avian vet visits typically range from $80–$200 for a checkup, with bloodwork adding $100–$300. Budget for this as part of responsible bird ownership. Some clinics offer wellness plans.
