The First Week with Your New Bird
Day by Day Guide
Day 1: Arrival
Place the bird in their new cage and let them be. Offer food and water. Speak softly but do not try to handle them. Cover the cage partially to provide a sense of security.
Day 2–3: Observation
Watch from a distance. Note what they eat, how they move, when they vocalize. Sit near the cage and read or work quietly. Start saying their name in a positive tone.
Day 4–5: First Contact
Offer a treat through the cage bars. Do not force it. If they take it, great. If not, leave it on the cage floor and try again later. Talk to them while offering treats.
Day 6–7: Building Routine
Establish consistent feeding times, sleep schedule, and interaction periods. Open the cage door and let the bird come out on their own terms. Do not chase or grab.
What to Watch For
Monitor droppings for changes (stress can alter droppings). Ensure they are eating and drinking. Watch for signs of illness: fluffed feathers, sitting on the floor, laboured breathing.
Expectations
Some birds warm up in days; others take weeks or months. Let the bird set the pace. Every positive interaction builds the foundation of your relationship.
Vet Visit
Schedule a wellness check within the first week. This establishes a baseline and catches any health issues from the previous environment.
