Taming a Shy or Fearful Bird
Building Trust Takes Time
Whether you have adopted a bird from a rescue or are working with a hand-shy bird, taming requires patience, consistency, and respect for the bird's boundaries.
Step 1: Proximity
Spend time near the cage without trying to interact. Read a book, work on your laptop, or talk softly. Let the bird get used to your presence without pressure. This can take days or weeks.
Step 2: Talking and Treats
Speak softly and offer high-value treats (millet spray for small birds, nuts for parrots) through the cage bars. Let the bird approach the treat on their own terms.
Step 3: Hand in the Cage
Once the bird takes treats from your hand through the bars, try offering treats with your hand inside the cage. Move slowly and do not chase the bird. If they retreat, simply hold still and wait.
Step 4: Step-Up Training
When the bird is comfortable with your hand in the cage, gently press your finger against their lower chest and say "step up." Reward immediately with a treat and praise.
What NOT to Do
Never grab the bird, towel them forcefully (except for medical emergencies), chase them around the cage, or punish fearful behaviour. These actions destroy trust and set back your progress.
Timeframe
Taming can take anywhere from days to months depending on the bird's history. Previously abused or neglected birds need extra patience. Celebrate small victories.
